Formalism used by Leśniewski to present mathematical theory is called a radical one. According to the author, it is the implementation of the postulates of the so-called formal arithmeticians. Mathematical theory is presented as a pure game of formulas devoid of content. It is governed by the precise rules described in the metalanguage. The author stresses the difference between Leśniewski’s and Hilbert’s mathematical approaches.

Artykuł omawia wzajemne kontakty i wspólnotę myśli dwóch wybitnych pisarzy i filozofów Bolesława Micińskiego i Stanisława Ignacego Witkiewicza, którzy mimo dużej różnicy wieku byli blisko zaprzyjaźnieni. Podejmowane przez nich problemy odsyłają do międzywojennej atmosfery filozoficznej w Polsce i w Europie, a także do ożywionych dyskusji w gronie krytyków literackich i awangardowych pisarzy. Witkiewicz jako pierwszy Polak zapoznał się z psychoanalizą i znacznie wpłynął na jej znajomość u Micińskiego, choć ich sposoby rozumienia teorii Freuda wyraźnie się rozeszły. Miciński był też gorącym (...) zwolennikiem teorii Czystej Formy, realizatorem jej założeń w swojej twórczości i rzecznikiem unaukowienia krytyki literackiej poprzez jej mocne osadzenie w filozofii. Witkacy patronował jego poglądom estetycznym wyłożonym najpełniej w nieopublikowanej pracy magisterskiej Rzeczywistość i jej deformacja w sztuce napisanej pod kierunkiem Władysława Tatarkiewicza. Obaj zdecydowanie opowiadali się przeciw wszelkiemu redukcjonizmowi w filozofii; byli przeciwnikami fizykalizmu Koła Wiedeńskiego oraz antymetafizycznego nastawienia szkoły lwowsko-warszawskiej. Zwłaszcza Miciński dostrzegał słabość myśli analitycznej i poszukiwał dla filozofii formy bardziej pojemnej. W końcowym okresie twórczości Micińskiego stanął w wyraźnej opozycji wobec totalitaryzmu i mechanizacji życia, co było znamienne również dla Witkacego. Dla autora Portretu Kanta Witkiewicz był z pewnością mistrzem w dziedzinie filozofii, wciąż jednak pozostaje otwarte pytanie, ile od swego młodszego przyjaciela zaczerpnął autor Szewców? (shrink)

The aim of the work is to present the conservative views of the journalist and historian Henryk Lisicki and the role he played in the community with which he collaborated, i.e. the Krakow conservatives called the Stańczyk Circle. The source of the article are monographs, brochures, dissertations, essays and articles published in „Przegląd Polski“ by Lisicki. In order to evaluate to what extent Lisicki’s political thought was original, and to what extent it was in conformity with the Stańczyk Circle, the (...) publications of Walerian Kalinka, Stanisław Tarnowski, Michał Bobczyński, Józef Szujski and Stanisław Koźmian were also used. While working on the topic, the author made use of the works specializing in the history of Polish and Western conservative thought published by Ryszard Ludwikowski, Bogdan Szlachta, Jacek Bartyzel, Józef Szacki and the views expressed by the members of the Stańczyk Circle such as Michał Jaskólski, Wojciech Dutka, Stanisław Filipowicz, Henryk Michalak. When examining the above issues, a comparative method was used, tracing both the similarities and differences in the ideas of Lisicki and his colleagues from the Stańczyk Circle. The main thesis formulated in the work is that although Lisicki did not belong to the group of leaders, his close intellectual ties with Stanisław Koźmian gave him a respected position among Krakow conservatives. The analysis of his works confirmed that he was also capable of original reflections which focused on the attitude of the conservatives to the nineteenth-century democratization processes, the evolution of Western absolute monarchies towards the constitution democracies and the expansion of electoral rights. Hence, it was symptomatic for Lisicki and his community to argue, inter alia, for the necessity of rapprochement with moderate liberals, the aim of which was to weaken the danger coming from the revolted masses which were being under the influence of radicals. The Cognitive Science of Religion represents a contemporary attempt at a naturalistic explanation of religion. There is debate as to whether its account of how religious beliefs arise is reconcilable with the religious account, which holds that religious beliefs are caused by God. In my paper, I argue that these two accounts cannot be reconciled when it comes to the specific question of how Christian religious beliefs arise if one accepts an important theological doctrine of the supernaturality of Christian belief. (...) This doctrine implies that there can be no natural explanation for how Christian beliefs arise because they are a gift of divine grace. This leads to a conundrum for Christian theists: they can either reject the CSR account of how their religious beliefs arise, or they can reject the supernaturality of Christian belief. I argue that the latter is preferable. I then draw on the work of the theologian Denis Edwards to illustrate how one can drop this doctrine without abandoning some other fundamental tenets of Christian theology. (shrink)

Cognitive science of religion is sometimes portrayed as having no bearing on the theological doctrines of particular religious traditions, such as Christianity. In this paper, I argue that the naturalistic account of the etiology of religious beliefs offered by the cognitive science of religion undermines the important Christian doctrine of the grace of faith, which teaches that the special gift of divine grace is a necessary precondition for coming to faith. This has some far-reaching ramifications for Christian theology. -/- .

Celem artykułu jest krytyczna analiza koncepcji J.H. Newmana, zgodnie z którą doświadczenie sumienia prowadzi jednostkę do wiary w Boga. Fenomenologiczna analiza doświadczenia moralnego prowadzi Newmana do wniosku, że doświadczenie to jest zrozumiałe tylko wtedy, jeśli zinterpretujemy sumienie jako głos Boga. Pokazuję – wbrew Newmanowi – że doświadczenie sumienia nie jest jednoznaczne. Nie da się wyjaśnić, dlaczego jednostka interpretuje je w kategoriach teistycznych, a nie jakichś innych. Potrzebne jest przyjęcie dodatkowych mechanizmów, które tłumaczą, dlaczego jednostka zinterpretowała swoje sumienie w kategoriach teistycznych. (...) As Chinese Studies in Philosophy enters its twenty-fifth year, we wish to thank the editor since its inception, Professor Cheng Chung-ying of the University of Hawaii, for his many years of service, and to welcome with this issue our new editor, Professor Michael Schoenhals of Stockholm University.

The aim of my paper is to interpret S. Kierkegaard's concept of a leap as a metaphor for the process of moving from one conceptual scheme to another. The basis for this reading of the concept is provided by the growing recognition of Kierkegaard's philosophy as dealing with conceptual schemes, equipements or paradigms through which reality is interpreted. I use Kierkegaard's metaphor as a point of departure for the analysis of the conditions of possibility and the very process of changing (...) conteptual schemes in general. I use the story of Abraham and Isaac, as described in „Fear and Trembling”, as a source of examples illustrating more general points I make during my analysis. Firstly, I present a general understanding of what a conceptual scheme is and how it is functioning. Afterwards, I show how this functioning is impaired in case of Abraham and Isaac. Finally, I put forward a hypothesis that the problems that Abraham's scheme is encountering due to God's demand to sacrifice Isaac can all be reduced to the fact that a very deep change in meaning of certain terms within the conceptual scheme, such as "God", "good" or "duty", has occured. The adoption of new meanings would be equivalent to moving into another conceptual scheme. (shrink)

In this paper, I critically analyse Jerome Gellman’s proposal that there existsa type of experience in which a subject experiences evil and perceives in this evil that there is no God. This a-religious experience gives prima facie support to the belief that there is no God. I show how accepting Gellman’s pro-posal allows us to go beyond the classical distinction between the intellectualand the emotional problem of evil. It also allows us to defend the rationality of some atheists, who do (...) not believe in God because they experienced evil, but do not know the relevants arguments from evil. I suggest that there are twoproblems with Gellman’s account. The first is that there are no clear criteria of identifying a given experience of evil as the perception of God’s non-existence. The second problem concerns the scope of Gellman’s proposal. It is possible that some experiences of evil, which lead people to the belief that there is no God, do not count as perceptions that there is no God. In case of beliefsformed on the basis of such experiences, one must therefore look for another,non-perceptual grounds for justifying such beliefs. (shrink)

Innerhalb verschiedener Arten der Argumentation für die Existenz Gottes gibt es auch eine, in der folgende Disjunktion zum Ausgangspunkt gesetzt wird: 1) entweder existiert kein unabhängiges Seiendes oder 2) das unabhängige Seiende existiert. Diese Disjunktion ist vollständig. Es genügt also, ihren ersten Teil zu falsifizieren, der impliziert, dass nur das abhängige Seiende existiert, damit sich der zweite als wahr erweist. Der Weg der Falsifikation des ersten Teils der Disjunktion bestünde hingegen in der Entscheidung zwischen den Gliedern folgender Disjunktion: a) entweder (...) bedarf die bedingte Wirklichkeit einer endlichen Anzahl von Bedingungen, oder b) sie bedarf einer unendlichen Anzahl von Bedingungen. Na spotkaniu jezuitów-filozofów z terenu Europy w Padwie 29 sierpnia 1996 r. o. Joseph Schmidt SJ wykladowca w jezuickiej Hochschule für Philosopie w Monachium wygłosił referat pt.: Kontingenz - Freiheit - Theodizee [Przygodność - Wolność - Teodycea]. Sposród trzech punktów jego referatu ustosunkuję się tylko do pierwszego, ponieważ rozumienie naszej wolności i dobroci Boga zależy od rozumienia przygodności bytu.

W Encyklice Fides et ratio Jan Paweł II nawołuje do współpracy teologii z filozofią. Podkreślając inspirującą rolę teologii dla filozofii, większy nacisk kładzie jednak na potrzeby dowartościowania filozofii, zwłaszcza metafizyki, która w wielu środowiskach, nawet w uczelniach kościelnych, została zaniedbana. Wśród licznych antymetafizycznych nurtów współczesnych, Papież wymienia pozytywizm, materializm, scjentyzm i relatywizm. Różniąc się od siebie nurty te maja jednak z sobą coś wspólnego. Pozytywizm za źródło i kryterium prawdy uznaje doświadczenie zmysłowe. Zdania o zjawiskach danych w doświadczeniu maja wartość (...) prawdopodobną. Zawsze istnieje możliwość ich zakwestionowania. Stąd relatywizm prawdy. Prócz tego ograniczenie poznania de empirii implikuje zamkniecie się na rzeczywistość pozazmysłową, duchową. Z nieuprawnionego metodologicznie przekonania, ze to co niepoznawalne zmysłami nie istnieje, rodzi się materializm. Konieczność dotyczy systemów formalnych, one jednak nie mają charakteru ontologicznego, nie mówią same z siebie niczego o rzeczywistości. Opierają się na konwencjach. To stanowi inne źródło relatywizmu. (shrink)

Książka nawiązuje do encykliki Papieża Jana Pawła II Fides et ratio. W czterech rozdziałach są w niej omawiane takie pojecia, jak: filozofia, objawienie, prawda, wiara, rozum, metafizyka, mądrość. Possenti wyraża nadzieję, że nie tylko objawienie jest katolickie, tzn. powszechne, ale także rozum. Dzięki temu jest możliwe pogodzenie wiary i rozumu. Książka jest pisana przystępnym, spokojnym, nieagresywnym językiem, zrozumiała także dla czytelników mniej obeznanych z filozofią. Jeśli nie odpowiada na wszystkie pytania i nie rozwiązuje wszystkich trudności, to przynajmniej pokazuje, gdzie kryją (...) się niebezpieczeństwa i zachęca do szukania bezpieczniejszej drogi, jaką jest filozofia realistyczna z klasyczny definicją prawdy. Do czasu sformułowania teorii kwantów istniało przekonanie, że rzeczywistość jest otwarta dla naszego poznania i ze poznanie polega tylko na biernym przyjmowaniu obrazów przedmiotów. Sądzono, że uogólniające działanie umysłu nie wnosi niczego nowego do treści przyjmowanej i że inny jest tylko sposób istnienia tej treści w umyśle. Niektóre jednak fakty z mikroświata wydają się domagać zmodyfikowania owego poglądu. Istnieje pewna naturalna granica naszego poznania indywidualnych przedmiotów, której w żaden sposób przekroczyć nie możemy. Stwierdzenie tego ograniczenia przybrało postać zasady nieoznaczoności. Wiąże (...) się ją z nazwiskiem Heisenberga, który sformułował ją w 1927 r. Słuszności samej zasady nieoznaczoności nikt nie kwestionuje, trudności pojawiają się w jej zrozumieniu. John Polkinghorn pisze: „Największym paradoksem teorii kwantów jest to, że po ponad 50 latach pomyślnego wykorzystywania jej technik, jej wyjaśnienie jest ciągle przedmiotem dyskusji. Wszyscy się zgadzamy co do tego, jak przeprowadzać rachunki, a nasze odpowiedzi pasują do doświadczeń jak rękawiczka, a jednak nie możemy się zgodzić wszyscy co do tego, o co właściwie tu chodzi". Istnieją więc przynajmniej dwie interpretacje TK: ontologiczna i teoriopoznawcza. (shrink)

Jörg Disse, urodzony w 1959 r., po uzyskaniu stopnia doktora i po habilitacji pracował jako docent w Papieskim Uniwersytecie „Gregorianum" w Rzymie, a obecnie wykłada na Wydziale Teologicznym Wyższej Szkoły w Lucernie. Opublikował wiele prac naukowych, które cechują się zarazem rzetelnością i przystępnością. Krótka historia metafizyki zachodniej posiada także te dwa przymioty. Odznacza się dużą erudycją, a zarazem czyta się ją łatwo i z zainteresowaniem.

The proof proceeded from the disjunction: The independent Being exists or does not exists The objective of the paper in „Forum" was to analyse the relation of dependence which was the central point to Spitzer's proof. Since in September 2001 the second part of the american Jesuit's disquisition appeared in the same periodical, it seems suitable to (...) react to this new text too. Spitzer has presented there three new arguments for the existence of God: from the past time, from the distinction between actuality and mere possibility and from a Lonerganian interpretation of the same distinction. While he named the proofs presented in the part I metaphysical, he qualified the proofs brought forward in the part H as cosmological, in view of the facts belonging to inanimate nature, such as: time, space, the velocity of light, etc. which serve him as starting-points. It is worth stressing that Spitzer's method is conducive to discussion, because he adduces concrete examples, something which makes his mind more comprehensible. Had he used some vague descriptions or general definitions, discussion would have been more difficult. So let us analyse the new proposed proofs. (shrink)

Jak czytamy na czwartej stronie okładki recenzowanej książki, „niezależna filozofia przyrody uznaje wyniki pozytywnej nauki oraz teorii nauki jako refleksji nad nią, zadaje jednak pytanie, czym jest owa przyroda, która jest przedmiotem techniczno-praktycznych i etyczno-praktycznych sytuacji". Książka składa się ze Wstępu i 6 nierównej objętości rozdziałów. Mimo, że nosi tytuł Naturphilosophie, sugerujący, że jest ona systematycznym wykładem filozofii przyrody, faktycznie stanowi wprowadzenie do tego rodzaju filozofii. Autor przedstawia w niej panorama współczesnych poglądów na filozofię, szczególnie na metafizyki, i przeprowadza gruntowną (...) ich krytykę. Ogólną tezą autora jest stwierdzenie, że nauki przyrodnicze programowo odcinają się od filozofii, odrzucając szczególnie pojęcie celowości. W praktyce jednak posługują się terminologią teleologiczną, w czym ujawnia się bądź ich niekonsekwencja, bądź ograniczenie. Autor jest zdania, że w poglądach wielu filozofujących fizyków kryje się niczym nie podbudowany platonizm, i jest skłonny przyznać w wielu przypadkach rację Arystotelesowi, którego w sposób nieuzasadniony współcześnie wielu kwestionuje. In this paper on the nature of the human being's responsibility for his actions I deliberately omit the controversy surrounding the determinism/indeterminism problem. To be sure, the free-will issue plays a prominent and very important role in any models of human responsibility and is the most frequently disputed issue in this discussion, for the human being is responsible insofar as his decisions can be said to be free. Though no less important, the interconnection between the subject, his action and its (...) consequences on the other hand receives less attention, and yet - though it is no less important: the way in which this interconnection is conceived can have weighty repercussions in practical life, and unfortunately not all approaches are appropriate or adequate. The problem of change has been solved in the philosophical systems threefold: in the radical statism, in the radical variabilism and in the moderate systems. Statism follows the rationalistic theory of knowing, variabilism - the empiricistic one. The systems combining both, rationalism and empiricism try to reconcile statism and variabilism in diferent ways. E.g. Aristotle solved the problem within his theory of potency and act. In his opinion the arts and species are stable, the individuals are variable. Stagirite has construed (...) a complete theory of change. Unfortunately, his theory laboured under a misconception because of including the local movement among the changes. That was a reason why i n the system of Aristotle there appeared many antinomies. Specifically: While all the changes tend to a limit, the local movement has no limit. This fact is peculiarly evident i n the „most perfect" form of movement, the circular. While the limit of change is more perfect than its beginning, no place is more perfect than the other place occupied by a moving thing. Changes occur between the contraries, the places are not contrary. (shrink)

Mocną stroną Wciórki jest dobra orientacja wśród poglądów nowożytnych filozofów. Szczególnie wartościowe są końcowe rozdziały książki, zwłaszcza porównanie dwóch koncepcji Boga: filozoficznej i religijnej. Słabszą stroną podręcznika jest opracowanie i prezentacja metafizyki klasycznej. Autor nie pokazał mianowicie, jak jest jeszcze możliwa metafizyka po Kancie. Nie ustosunkował się do zarzutów M. Heideggera, który klasyczna filozofia Boga nazywa onto-teologią, sprowadzającą jakoby Boga do rzędu bytów ograniczonych. Świadomie nie wszedł w dyskusję z fizyką współczesną, mimo ze np. kosmologia relatywistyczna i teoria kwantów są (...) wyzyskiwane w celu negacji potrzeby istnienia Boga Stwórcy dla wyjaśnienia świata. Brak konkretnych przykładów w przedstawianiu argumentów św. Tomasza sprawia wrażenie aprioryzmu. W sumie książka Wiedzieć, ze jest Bóg nie wydaje się być ostatnim słowem w filozofii Boga, ale może być materiałem do dalszych przemyśleń. Obecny artykuł ma na celu sprowokowanie dyskusji, która by przybliżyła rozwiązanie sporu o argumenty na istnienie Boga. (shrink)

Leszek Kołakowski, who was brought up in the climate of Marxist philosophy, has moved away very considerably from the Marxist position of extreme atheism, but he may not be called a convert. Of the two contrasting attitudes which may be assumed in respect of the existential problems, the attitude of the priest and the attitude of the jester, Kołakowski is closer to the latter. The priest, if he is to perform his role well, should take his duties seriously; he should (...) be convinced of the truth of the deity that he serves. In carrying out his office he is expected to be ceremonious, formal and serious. The jester's position is more comfortable. His task is not to conduct a systematic and serious search for the truth: it is more the role of the critic. He is to observe the faults, the nonsenses, and the blunders, unconcerned for the persons at the butt-end of his critique and how they are to extricate themselves from it. The jester need not be a merry clown at all. Perhaps that is why alongside God, the sub-title of Kołakowski's book mentions things that are sad. Kołakowski is fascinated by the figure of Satan, who wants to be taken seriously but in culture, especially in the folk culture is attributed grotesque forms. Only the devil of the jasełka traditional Polish Christmas play makes audiences laugh hilariously, the real devil is deadly serious, since he is eternally thirsting for the truth and for love. Kołakowski is not pleased with his role of jester. But neither would he be any use as a priest. He has no gospel of his own which he could pass on to other people. He is trapped between two absurdities, which he briefly formulates after Pascal as: „The basic tenets of faith... are absurd, and yet the world image which excludes those tenets is even more absurd". Często używa się wyrażenia „wchodzenie w byt'' zamiast np. „zmiana substancjalna" czy w ogóle powstawanie. Aby sprawdzić, czy to wyrażenie jest poprawne, trzeba zbadać, jak rozumie się w nim terminy składowe: „byt" i „wchodzenie". Dlatego artykuł składa się z dwóch części. W pierwszej będziemy się starali określić, co rozumiemy przez „byt", w drugiej, co mamy na myśli, mówiąc o „wchodzeniu w byt". Kiedy w czasie pewnej dyskusji padło hasło tzw. ontologii dynamicznej, a jako koronny jej przykład podano „rzekę, do której (...) nie można dwa razy wstąpić", uznałem za konieczne zaprzeczyć nie tylko trafności przykładu, ale także zakwestionować bytowość rzeki. Uzasadniłem moje stanowisko tym, ze ruch nie jest zmianą, a więc nie nadaje się do ilustracji ontologii dynamicznej, rzeka zaś to zbiór bytów indywidualnych, mianowicie cząstek H2O i wielu innych, np. CO2, ograniczony warunkami zewnętrznymi. (shrink)
